5 Tricks that will make your LinkedIn profile stand out

LinkedIn is by far the biggest business and recruitment networking site that is available on the internet. There are many recruiters, headhunters and HR managers actively searching the listings for new employees as well as many businesses that are looking for business opportunities and partners. But if your profile does not make you stand out and let people know who you are and what you are capable of then you are likely to be overlooked. Like any other search engine when you search for someone with a specific set of skills or a specific job title on LinkedIn the site will look for matches that contain the words that are being searched for. So if you are “Quality manager” and are looking for work in this area then you must ensure that you have the keywords used frequently within your profile, headline, and summary to ensure that you show up in the searches. So even if your last job title was “Organizational excellence manager” but the role was that of quality manager ensure that you say so or you will not get shown when people search for “quality manager”. The same goes for your skills and abilities, make sure that you clearly mention them and use the keywords that the recruiters and others will use when searching for them. Use a professional picture

While it may be OK to use that picture of you and the kids on holiday as your profile picture on Facebook or even a picture of your pet cat in a funny pose you will want to put forward a more professional image on LinkedIn. Viveka von Rosen, the LinkedIn Expert, touched on the practice of “reverse engineering.” This is a way to communicate with individuals you share a group with by doing a simple people or advanced search. Through these searches, you can see if a person is a member of a shared group and send them a message to connect.

Jo Saunders of Wildfire Social Marketing expound on one of the most hated acts of social networking – being a spammer! Never treat LinkedIn as a mailing list. Like Saunders said, “being connected does not give you the okay to send me your bulk message via LinkedIn.”

Social media platforms are perfect for it. Networking with industry professionals, showcasing your skills, and giving a taste of your personality, all in one place. Here are a few tips to make the most of your online experience when you’re on the job hunt.

  • Go beyond just looking on generic job postings sites. Yes, they are a good starting point, but there is so much more out there. Get exploring!
  • Be active. The more you engage online, the better you’ll get and the easier it will become. One of the keys to mastering social media is consistency. Building up your online presence takes time, but it’s well worth it.
  • Participate in Twitter chats. Twitter is one of the quickest and easiest ways to directly get in touch with some of the biggest names in whatever industry you’re hoping to get into. You’re able to start up conversations with people all over the globe and you never know where you could end up with a simple tweet. On top of all that, be sure to follow hashtags that relate to your field and keep your eye out for opportunities.
  • Join groups on LinkedIn to connect with people in different industries and have an idea of some of the companies you want to work for. Everyone is getting on LinkedIn (if you haven’t, do it now). Put some time into making your profile the best it can be. First impressions are everything and you want to grab a potential employer’s attention. Recruiters are always using sites like LinkedIn to find what they’re looking for.
  • Clean up your Facebook profiles. It’s pretty self-explanatory, but you’d be surprised at what can be found sometimes. You’ll be glad you did it.

Social media is all about communication, so use it wisely and take advantage of all the tools you have access to. You never know who might stumble upon your profile and think you’re the perfect fit for a job. It’s worth a shot!
